Medical University of Hanover
Brief outlineSince it was established in 1963, the Medical University of Hanover has developed into an internationally respected centre of optimal patient care and innovative research. In 2006, MHH scientists succeeded in obtaining 51,5 million € in funds from third parties. Of the 180,000 patients treated every year, around 10 % visit the Departement of Otorhinolaryngology (chair: Thomas Lenarz, M.D., Ph. D.). The particular clinical specialities are skull base surgery, laser medicine and implantable hearing aids. More than 3,500 profoundly deaf patients have had their hearing improved so far following treatment at the biggest cochlear implantation centre in the world.
R&D operationsOptical technologies represent one of the main areas of MHH research, particularly in the Departement of Otorhinolaryngology. Engineers, scientists and doctors co-operate on an interdisciplinary basis to prepare the implementation of new clinical applications for optical technologies:
In-house research projects exploring pioneering medical laser applications are carried out in cooperation with Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH), University of Applied Sciences Hanover (FHH, Industrial Design Faculty) and industrial partner areas of special interest include hard tissue processing and the establishment of controlled laser systems in particular.
