The Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films is a competent partner answering all questions related to surface technologies. Since its foundation in 1990 the institute became one of the leading German research facilities in this special field and in some disciplines it gained a world-wide reputation. In its function as research and development service center with close relationship to the industry the Fraunhofer IST focusses its competences on coating and process development, coating applications and characterization of layers. Several scientists, engineers and technicians are developing materials with new or improved functions. The aim is to find solutions tailored to the client‘s demand and to create innovative market-oriented products. The services of Fraunhofer IST are complemented by the competences of the Institut für Oberfächentechnik IOT of the Technische Universität Braunschweig and other institutes of the Fraunhofer Group for Surface Technology and Photonics.
