HarzOptics was founded in 2006 by three scientists working for HarzUniversity. In 2007 the company became a research institute officially aligned with Harz University. Current research focuses mainly on data transmission systems utilizing polymer optical fibers (POF) as transmission medium. With OPTOTEACH, HarzOptics was able to release the first optics teaching system that combines POF transmission and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The company offers lab equipment like POF couplers / splitters, fiber tapers and color filters as well as consulting services. An optics distance education programme is currently in the works.

HarzOptics specializes on the adaption of WDM technologies for polymer fiber data tranmission systems. Two of the companies founders were honored with the prestigious research prize of the Magdeburg International Chamber of Commerce – alongside a colleague from Harz University – for designing a WDM demultiplexer. HarzOptics also offers color field measurements as well as other advanced measurement services.
