Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry

Nanobiophotonics

Brief outline

The department of Nanobiophotonics at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry was founded in 2002 headed by Prof. Dr. Stefan Hell. There are more than 50 persons working at the department including physicists, biologists, chemists and engineers whose main focus are the optical technologies. They are working in interdisciplinary collaboration on the development, concepts and use of light microscopes with a resolution far beyond Abbe’s diffraction limit.

Research

  • Laser-scanning microscopy with 3D-resolution in the nanometer range (nanoscopy)
  • Microscopy with high temporal resolution
  • Investigation of photophysical properties of fluorescent markers
  • Application of nanoscopy to biological probes
  • Mathematical image restoration and  improvement of spatial resolution

Co-operation

  • German Cancer Research Centre Heidelberg
  • University of Göttingen
  • Laser-Laboratorium Göttingen e.V.
  • ENI, European Neuroscience Institute
  • Harvard Medical School
  • University of Turku
  • Leica Microsystems GmbH
  • The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm
  • University of Siegen
  • ATTO-TEC, Siegen
  • MPI for Experimental Medicine Training and education
  • PhD and graduation thesis work in most of the natural sciences
  • Internships in physics, biology, chemistry
