Clausthal Technical University

Institute for Energy Research and Physical Technologies

Brief outline

Traditionally the research activities of the institute are in surface sciences and surface microscopy but since 1998 new programs in photonics and optical technologies are established. The institute is divided into four divisions:

  • Physics of surfaces and interfaces
  • Atomic and molecular physics at surfaces
  • Applied photonics
  • Optical technologies Scientific and non-scientific staff: 50

Core skills

  • Research in the fields of surface science, nonlinear optics at interfaces, laser spectros copy, miniaturized new laser sources, photonic materials, holographic storage, nonlinear optics and integrated optics
  • Teaching programs in experimental physics and physical technologies in the fields of research

Co-operation

  • University of California, Berkeley, USA
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India
  • Rice University, Houston, USA
  • Technion, Israel Institute of Technology,
    Haifa, Israel
  • Ioffe Institute. St. Petersburg, Russia
  • Université Claude-Bernard Lyon 1, Lyon, France

R&D operations

The program photonics/optical technologies concentrates on the topics:

  • fiber-optic laser sensors for environmental and industrial process control as well as landmine detection
  • picosecond-MIR-LIDAR
  • mid-infrared (MIR) laser sources by difference-frequency generation in AgGaS2 and LiNbO3
  • DFB-laser in polymer- and ZnO-films
  • microchiplaser and fiber amplifiers
  • femtosecond pump-probe experiments with optical materials
  • nonlinear optical laser spectroscopy of
    interfaces
  • holographic storage
  • interaction of spatial optical solitons
  • discrete solitons in waveguide arrays
  • integrated optics in LiNbO3
  • wavelength multiplexing
  • new optical materials

Training and further education

  • undergraduate diploma program in physics/physics technologies (degree: Dipl.-Phys.)
  • advanced diploma program for students with degree in physics technologies of University of Applied Sciences (degree: Dipl.-Phys.)
  • Ph.D. program in physics
    (degree: Dr. rer. nat.)
  • student and visitor lab for experimental
    physics, including micro-optics
  • advanced teacher training in the field of
    photonics/optics technologies
